To explain how People-Progress may assist with ‘Sexuality’; which can be a deeply sensitive and personal issue, it may be best to start by offering a few definitions.
There are many definitions of the term Sexuality, which cover a broad spectrum. As Parents and Carers this can be highly emotive as often ‘adults’ will try to shape the perceptions of their loved ones. Sexuality is about understanding the sexual feelings and attractions we feel towards others, not solely about who we have sex with. There are different types of sexuality, and it can take time to figure out what is the appropriate fit for an individual.
Given this phase of a child’s/young person’s development, it is not uncommon for a level of confusion to be experienced by the individual. This is quite normal. This will have implications for a person’s Sexual Orientation; whether being gay, lesbian, bisexual, straight, or any other categorisation – this is about sexual attraction. All of these sexual orientations are perfectly normal.
In general terms, “Sex” refers to the biological differences between males and females, such as genitalia and genetic differences. “Gender” is more difficult to define, but it can refer to the role of a male or female in society, known as a gender role, or an individual’s concept of themselves, or gender identity.
As things currently stand, People-Progress is aware of the difficulties, dilemmas, and challenges that children/young people, parents/carers, family, and friends are confronted with in trying to assimilate and process all of the information about sexuality, ‘growing up’, and transitioning into adulthood.
Let People-Progress assist with encouraging the discussion between children/young people and adults so that respective views and positions can be discussed in a climate of comfort and a spirit of positivity and ‘openness’ to enable all voices to be heard in an attempt to meaningfully sustain relationships.
